Place du Martroi - Orléans, to visit

Place du Martroi

Since 1855, the equestrian statue of Joan of Arc has stood, a monumental bronze by Denis Foyatier.
The bas-reliefs on the base represent the various scenes of Joan's life from the voices of Domremy to the stake in Rouen.
The plinth was damaged during the fighting at the Liberation in 1944. The bas-reliefs were removed in 1987 and replaced by casts. The originals are kept in the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

Sainte-Croix Cathedral

600 years to build, but in the end a real architectural jewel! Dating from the 13th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, Orléans Cathedral bears the imprint of the various royal successions, and in particular the elegance of classicism, which makes it both architecturally and artistically original.
One of the five largest Gothic cathedrals in France (140m long, 53m wide with a spire rising to 106m), Sainte-Croix was begun in 1287 and officially inaugurated on 8 May 1829. It has a long history: Joan of Arc prayed there, Henry IV initiated its reconstruction in 1601, Louis XIV financed the transepts which pay homage to him by displaying his motto and his sun. The magnificently sculpted woodwork in the choir and the stained glass windows telling the story of Joan of Arc are among its 'treasures', as are the 11 richly endowed 13th century chapels that form its chevet.
Exceptional closure of visits on 8 and 9 June 2019.

Hôtel Groslot - To visit Orléans

Groslot Hotel

MUSEUMS Coffered ceilings, painted canvas walls, moulded panelling, furniture covered in Cordovan leather and heavily carved, Aubusson tapestries... Nothing was too good for Jacques Groslot, bailiff to the King of France and a fan of modernism! Behind the superb red brick façade, built between 1549 and 1558, you will discover the history of this private residence, which was transformed over time into a "common house": first through the main hall, then the former council room and the former mayor's office, and finally, the marriage hall where François II died, having come to preside over the Estates General in 1560 with his mother, Catherine de Médicis. Thanks to the Géomotifs application, collect the motifs to understand their meaning and discover the history of this unique place. A large bronze statue of Joan of Arc by Princess Marie d'Orléans stands guard over this vast Renaissance monument. Its characteristic red brick façade, its rich furniture and its Aubusson tapestries make it an exciting place to discover.
